Wed., Sept 9, snow day part II

Today I awoke to this (well, once there was daylight--my body still seems to be on Central time):

A little later in the morning, the sky brightened a little bit. This was as clear as it ever got--it was gorgeous. The rest of the day was grey.

So it was a pure work day, and I really made the most of it: by evening I had blocked out (with quite a bit of detail) an entire passage (or maybe movement?) of the band piece I'm working on. I know it's different in the movies, but I can assure you that composing in real life generally progresses at a fairly glacial pace. So it's a rare treat to have a day more like the movies. (Well, I didn't lie in bed and dictate to Salieri or anything.)

The forecast calls for clear skies and above-freezing temps in the afternoon: if that holds, I hope to get out for a hike. I can't do the one I had hoped to because the trailhead is a couple miles up a 4WD road. I could do that in the vehicle I brought, but not immediately after a snowstorm. That's asking for trouble.  (If the road isn't icy it will be super muddy.)

I leave here on Friday, for five days of backpacking in the Sangres. The forecast looks perfect: fall-like temps and clear skies. These last few days were unexpected, but if the forecast holds for my backpacking days, I'll have won the weather lotto.

Oh, by the way, I am here:
