St. Charles Peak snow hike

St. Charles peak is the second -highest peak in the Wet Mountains. I've done this hike before, so it seemed like a good choice given that there was still 6-8 inches of snow on the ground and following a trail would be challenging. Also, the trailhead is on a paved road, which was a big plus today. It's about 4.5 miles and 2,500 ft of elevation gain to the summit.

Hiking in heavy, wet snow is a lot of work. I was fortunate that the weather and trail conditions allowed me to make it to the summit, although it was completely socked in, very cold, and very windy when I got there, so I didn't stay long. The summit of St. Charles has a million-dollar view of the Sangres to the west, but not today, alas. Still, it was an amazing day out under very unusual September conditions. Just the drive there alone this morning was amazing; with everything draped in fresh snow.
